Ah….exercise. It can be a four letter word for some, others absolutely adore it, and some could love it or leave it. No matter what one thinks of it, the bottom line is that we all need it. Exercise is one of THE most important things in achieving and maintaining optimal health. These days, exercise should really be something that is prescribed, not only just like medications, but ultimately instead of medications.

Although we all know we need to exercise, there can be a lot of excuses and reasons not to do it. One thing that gets in the way for a lot of people is the stigma that you have to have a gym membership to exercise. Well, I’m here to totally bust that myth! I haven’t had a gym membership in years and I am still able to stay very active and get in great workouts.

Doing a simple swap like switching out your gym membership for other ways to exercise can have a huge amount of benefits. Let’s chat about some!

1) You get outside. I personally love to do most everything outside because I love the fresh air, but there are other easy ways to do things indoors, too. When you get outside, your whole view of the world changes, literally! Being in nature is calming, yet invigorating. Take a look around and enjoy what you see!

2) You save money.  Let’s face it, a gym membership is pretty costly nowadays. But, most everything you can do for exercise outside of a gym is super affordable or even free! The options are endless and your wallet will be thanking you in no time.

3) You save time. When you go to the gym, you’re stuck at the gym for the whole time you’re there. When you exercise outside of the gym, you can be more efficient with your time. No more timing driving to the gym, etc. You can also multi-task and get errands done at the same time as your workout. During your bike ride or walk, stop off at the post office and bank!

4) You meet like-minded people. Sure, you can meet people at the gym, but most likely you won’t find people who really enjoy doing the things you like to do for activity. When you join a running group, for example, you’re surrounded by a ton of other runners who are like-minded people who you’ll instantly connect with. That just doesn’t happen on machines at the gym.

5) You stimulate your brain. Doing the same thing over and over at the gym can lead to quite the level of boredom. When you exercise outside of the gym, you can do something different every day. Your brain gets stimulated and it keeps your body guessing. Your body will love you for keeping it on its toes! (Ha! Sorry couldn’t resist! 😉 )
